Until today i had never heard of MBS

However at work today i received a letter, post marked Leeds saying my computer had been used by soemone underage to access and age resitricted site and that i was legally liable for the costs.

i had never got any popups from this company and after speaking to the IT gys at work they belive it is unlikley that a computer was used for this purpose.

However they do at least have part of my identity and are using it to get information on passports, birth certificates etc.  This may have happened before but connat ffind any evidence on this site so i am posting this as a potentially new version of their scam and i am warning others to be on the look out for it

Needless to say the letter and envevelope, with a franked envelope will be sent to the police

Are you able to elaborate on this a bit more?  And will you be keeping a copy of the letter and envelope before forwarding to the police?  I think this is something that 'others' may like to see.  If you have access to any websites where you can upload images, perhaps you could do that and post a link?  Or email to me privately.

As you say, this is a rather nasty twist in a very nasty story.  Particularly as they're accusing you of allowing an underage person to access the sites they serve ..... Oh, and that begs another question - just how could they know this?

Yes, a scan of the letter and envelope (with personal info removed to protect your identity) would be really helpful to others here. This sounds like a new twist. Is there even the possibility that other people are now trying to scam money from people by using the MBS name?

hmmm, this is rather worrying,

Could you tell us which internet service provider you are with please??

as if you havnt given any information and all MBS have on you is an IP address then that only leaves one guilty party, your isp, they are the only ones who can link an IP address to a name.
If this is the case, then your ISP is breaking the data protection act!

I will attempt to post some extra information later today or tomorrow, including some scans of the letter.

However as far as i can tell MBS havent had access to my computer and the letter was apparently sent in response to an enquiry i made to them about access to the site, which i didnt do as i had never heard of them until the other day.

I am inclinded to think this is a 'fishing trip' designed to make me give them the information they want.  On visiting the police on saturday they advised me to ignore and destroy the letter although they did give me a refernce number to contact if there are further developments.

As to how they got my name and adress (my work address at that) i have no idea but i firmly belive no contact was made by internet and this is entirely a postal scam along the same lines as the internet one.

I looked at THE Platte website and looked at the 30 day free and left the site, then as with others after a couple of days the please pay now POPUP ON MY DESKTOP and finally the popup stayed on all the time so I rang Platte and the guy on the other end was quite threatening and abusive and said I had to pay £29.99 but I didn't sign anything and I didn't agree to anything, So I formatted my computer and thought that was the end of it.
A couple of days ago after about two months I received a letter from platte with my IP address and my home address. It demanded £29.99 or it would take me to court but I think I shall wait until the Court Summons arrives before I pay them

Did you say the pop up stayed there all the time?  Do you mean that it did not disappear after about one minute?  How many pop ups were there?

These are important questions, and I'd be extremely interested to have your reply.  You can email me via the envelope symbol under my name.
