I`m new to this forum.let me tell you my story about Platte.
Last year in September,i recieved a letter from Platte with the heading The Computer Owner, stating i had signed up for membership of their film club, and that i owed them £58.98.
So i checked the dates that  i was supposed to be on their site, and found that we were on holiday ,and the IP address was for a sky broadband connection, but we are not on that connection.
So realising it was a scam,i ignored the letter.
Then in February this year,i recieved a letter from them for the outstanding balance, failure to pay within 7 days of the letter  will result in them forwarding this debt to Oriel collections and will incur £25 administration fee.
I also ignored this letter, and recieved in March a letter from Oriel Collections, stating i now owe £83.98.
Firstly how did they find my address, when i hadn`t even heard of the company and secondly how can Oriel send out their letter without first checking up on the facts of the debt.
I have never been involved in anything like this before, how could the OFT allow this company to trade for so long.

pg8uk:  I suppose it is possible that somebody has given them your details in order to avoid payment themselves.  Do the communications mention you by name, or is the correspondence addressed "To the Computer Owner" (or a similar form of words)?

I don't know how up to date you are with developments, but you may want to check this out as it will perhaps lay your fears to rest.  You may also want to contact Michael Pollitt as he is interested in cases like yours.  You can read more about his interest in the matter here where he also gives details of how to contact him.

If you want further information, please feel free to email me using the facility on this site.  And we'll look forward to hearing how you get on with this.

Telling this Oriel company to stop probably won't have the desired effect . Everyone should enter a formal complaint against them. Request immediately when they call a copy of their complaints procedure, which by law they must provide . You could probably use the fact the debt is in dispute as the terms of the agreement are contrary to uk contract laws and 'the computer owner' or IP address is not a legally binding contractee. If you aren't satisified with their final response to your formal complaint  ( which you won't be ) , then you escalate it to a complaint to the financial ombudsman , who will charge them £400 for the privilege of investigating the complaint . If everyone did this , they would soon get fed up chasing £50 debts when they are incurring £400 case study fee's from the FOS.

I am still receiving Platte pop ups.   Can I do anything on my machine to stop this?

Particularly given that Platte has ceased trading in the UK and presumably it's now very hard to get hold of them, I'd suggest you are totally within your rights to use the methods outlined here to remove the software. Have a look at the removal section on this forum for advice that has worked for many other people.
