Yes at some point in the early hours of last Friday morning a Platte media product found its way onto our computer… the first I knew of it was when the first bill popped up.  When I spoke to the lady from South Africa, she informed me that if I thought it was my son who had downloaded the programme then I would have to send a copy of his birth certificate.  I have no intention of doing that. I also felt disinclined to give her my home address, or my email address.  She told me to write to them; It works out that the address is a P O Box in a town quite near to me.
I have lodged a complaint with the OFT and I have reported Platte Media to the Police, who say that this is a civil matter and that the company is operating inside the law, and I have been advised to write a strongly worded letter to them…!
All this doesn’t help me get rid of the software, and I’m afraid the solutions offered haven’t worked so far. I have tried the “easy pc company” route, the “platte.cmd” route the “prevx” route, (which will probably work, but cost min £10.00), and I am a little frightened to try the idea suggested by Rab, as I am worried that my son might click system restore if he reboots when I’m not around.
I am probably doing some simple thing wrong - can anyone help me?

You could try system restore yourself.  Make sure, though, that you go back to a point well before when the first pop up appeared, a week would be good.  Then, make sure you remove all other restore points before switching system restore back on.  This removal of other restore points is important, I gather.

Dear Frannie,
The same thing happened to me, there is only 2 of us who use our computer & neither of us were aware we had signed up to any form of contract, we ignored the bill which, appeared each time it we switched the computer on, it eventually stopped but an icon appeared on the desk top asking us to ring a number to get the free removal programme. Plus when we came to switch the computer off we found we could not shut it down in the normal way & had to swith it off at the socket. I rang the number for Platte Media but got no where. I tried system restore too but it had no affect.
I then contacted Panda Software which is the company we use to protect the computer, after running a couple of spyware programmes supplied by them & deleting files they told me to, it seems to have done the trick.
I think we paid £70 for 3 years cover & I often thought it was a waste of money but now I am glad we did when I read the storeys on this wed page.

Frannie,
I really sympathise with your problem - I had the same thing a little while ago.  However, this site is absolutely fantastic, I received loads of support and help from the guys on here, who helped to quickly sort out the problem and get the damn thing outta my system.  Be patient and trust the help you are offered on here - it will work.  As I am not entirely computer literate! I had to keep coming back for help, but these guys were all sympathetic, helpful and very patient! Good luck and I hope you get sorted soon
